Adani Versus Great Barrier Reef Conservationists

The Great Barrier Reef is in the spotlight at conservation groups argue with Adani mining
Adani has faced conservation groups in court over potential damage to the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland

Evidence of how Indian mining giant Adani’s plans to build Australia’s largest coal mine in the Galilee Basin could damage the Great Barrier Reef are set to be heard in a Queensland court.

Adani’s plans to build a $16.5 billion mine and export at least 50 million tonnes of coal from it per year are being legally challenged by conservation group Coast and Country.

Coast and Country are arguing that the financial benefits of the project have been overstated and the plans carry unacceptable environmental risks.
They stress the mine would damage the Great Barrier Reef corals.
Adani’s lawyer Peter Ambrose defended the company’s safeguards against environmental damage, labeling them appropriate.

He said a range of experts would testify about the project’s economic viability.

The case, before Land Court president Carmel MacDonald, should until until the end of the month.
