The 2016 Queensland Mining Contractor Awards finalists have today been announced, with a diverse selection of contractors from all over the state recognised for innovative thinking.
Category finalists (see full list below) include small local businesses, large civil contractors and both new and established mining industry businesses.
The Queensland Mining Contractor Awards cover time and cost saving, innovation, staff and community engagement and product launch categories.
Awards founder Jodie Currie says the high quality of entries this year was extremely impressive, reflecting the position of the industry two years on from the inaugural Awards.
“Entries were also extremely diverse – from re-engineering components that haven’t changed in decades, to taking existing processes and delivering them with new technology or breaking new ground with application of equipment or technology from another industry,” said Ms Currie.
“The common thread was certainly innovation in all shapes – companies realising that ‘the way we’ve always done it’ is able to be consistently challenged.”
The judging panel was comprised of industry experts including Margaret Davies, former Supply Chain Manager for Anglo American, Lucas Dow, former BMA Asset President, Michael Jones, Jellinbah Mine Production Manager and Michelle Zaunbrecher, Vice President of HSE for Arrow Energy.
Across their diverse backgrounds and perspectives, one thing the judges all agreed on was the need for winning projects to be a true partnership between the client and the contractor.
“There were so many excellent entries in the Cost Saving and Innovation categories, for example, that we were unable to choose just three finalists for each. This truly reflects the contractors of the mining industry putting their best foot forward in terms of delivering value and results for clients,” Ms Davies said.
Winners will be announced during a gala dinner on Wednesday July 27, during the 2016 QME exhibition in Mackay. The gala dinner is open to all interested parties, not just finalists or QME attendees.
Tickets are selling fast, with single tickets for $175 per person or $1700 for a table of 10. The evening will be a prime networking opportunity with key mining industry players in attendance, and also includes a three-course dinner, beverages and entertainment.
