Environmental approval for Kidston Solar Project

The 50MW Kidston Solar PV Project has received environmental approval from the Queensland Government.
Genex Power received confirmation from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection that the existing Environmental Authority over the Kidston site does not require any amendment to enable the construction and operation of the 50MW Kidston Solar PV project.
In an Australian first, the old Kidston gold mine, 270km north-west of Townsville, will undergo a dramatic change of use and become the third-largest hydroelectric energy storage project in
Australia, once operational.
Together with recent Development Approval and freehold land acquisition, all other material approvals and titles are now in place to enable construction of the project.
“Genex appreciates the continued support of the Queensland Government. In particular, the Queensland Government Department of Environment and Heritage Protection and Coordinator General worked closely with Genex to enable a timely approval process,” Genex managing director Michael Addison said.
With project approvals in place, Genex is now able to fast track development of the Kidston site into an important energy hub for the State of Queensland”
In March, Minister for State Development and Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Dr Anthony Lynham granted special status as a prescribed project for the project, which is expected to create more than 500 jobs.
Earlier this year, the Kidston Solar Project was one of 22 selected by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to progress to the next stage of its $100 million large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) competitive round.
