Isaac Mayor welcomes Labor’s FIFO Policy Announcement

FIFOThe Mayor of Queensland’s largest mining region, home to two 100% forced FIFO mines, has welcomed the Opposition’s support of Council’s position on 100% forced FIFO.

Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said it’s now more important than ever that people across regional Queensland have the opportunity to apply for local jobs in mines in our region.

“Today, the Leader of the Opposition Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced, should they be elected at the next state election, their plans to end 100% forced FIFO.”

“The Opposition’s anti-100% FIFO policy would address and provide protection for established resource communities and regional centres.”

“Most importantly it will facilitate and provide opportunity and choice for everyone.”

“The Opposition’s promise to review within their first 100 days of office, existing approvals in particular mines located near established communities, is very encouraging,” Mayor Baker said.

“It doesn’t matter what side of politics you are on, I think that even the greatest advocate of 100% forced FIFO would agree that things have significantly changed since the business case was written.”

“We have just experienced the biggest workforce reduction in recent times – this clearly shows the urgent need to reassess 100% forced FIFO work practices on our doorstep.”

“The end of 100% forced FIFO would enable sustainable mining, strong communities and give workers genuine choice to live in the communities where they work.”
