Job enquiries accepted for $580m energy project in FNQ

One of the nation’s most diverse services companies has been awarded the contract for a $580 million renewable energy project in Far North Queensland. The proponent is now collecting employment enquiries.

UGL recently won the engineering, construction and procurement (EPC) tender for Genex Power’s (GNX’s) Kidston Solar Project Phase One, 270km northwest of Townsville.

UGL is tasked with building a solar farm that has a capacity of 50 megawatts (MW), producing about 145,000MWh each year and powering up to 26,484 homes entirely with renewable energy, offsetting 120,000t of carbon dioxide per annum – the equivalent of removing up to 33,000 cars off the road.

No jobs are advertised yet, but they will be listed here: ugllimited.com/Job/Search?IsHidden=False&IsPostBack=True&Keyword=&ContentId=416&HideDiscipline=False&Discipline=&JobNumber=&Country=&State=Queensland&Region=&PageSize=10&PageIndex=1&Country=&Region=&State=&SortColumn=&SortDirection=ASC

GNX recently achieved financial close for the project after entering into a debt funding arrangement for a total of about $100 million with Société Générale and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC). The deal effectively finalises all necessary funding requirements for the project’s EPC and operation and maintenance costs.

“Energy storage solutions such as pumped hydro are one of the next steps in our clean energy transition. With the cost of solar generation continuing to decline, we are committed to working with developers such as Genex to finance opportunities that can complement Australia’s growing renewable energy capacity, by adding energy storage and grid stability services,” CEFC large-scale solar lead Gloria Chan says.

GNX previously announced a $5 million capital raising on the Australian Securities Exchange.

The project is now on track with first generation of solar panels expected to be installed during the last quarter of 2017 and expected to be operational before the end of April 2018.

The project is welcomed by the federally funded Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).

“Kidston holds the tantalising proposition of being Australia’s first large-scale solar project capable of delivering renewable energy into the grid around the clock. The plant could potentially contribute towards powering an adjacent 250MW pumped hydro storage plant Genex is developing with ARENA support. This would allow renewable energy to be stored through the day and delivered when needed most,” ARENA CEO Ivor Frischknecht says.

GNX will now focus on securing financial arrangements for its 250MW Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project, as well as the completion of technical feasibility studies for its 270MW Kidston Solar Project (Phase Two).
