A miner from Moranbah gave senior management at BHP a drubbing yesterday when he spoke at the company’s annual general meeting in Adelaide.
Kev Adams told shareholders and staff at the meeting that locals living in towns near the Caval Ridge and Daunia mines in Central Queensland were discriminated against in favour of FIFO miners.
Mr Adams said BHP’s 100 per cent FIFO practices at some mines was destroying families and killing communities.
Addressing BHP Chief Executive Andrew Mackenzie, Mr Adams said, “I know you have a big job Andrew, but you are damaging our mine and damaging our community,”
“You can imagine what that does to children with their parents living in a constant state of anxiety week to week, it’s an absolute fact I see every day in a town called Moranbah that used to be thriving and is turning into a dustbowl.”
Mr Adams was part of a contingent of Central Queensland miners who traveled to Adelaide for the meeting to protest against a range of issues including 100 per cent FIFO policies and the casualisation of the workforce.
The miners told the meeting that utilising contractors on less pay and diminished conditions was not the answer and could have serious implications for mine site safety.
The Chairman of BHP, Jac Nasser, said he understood the concerns of the miners, but that the changes in workforce make up were necessary in order to keep Australia globally competitive.
