Toowoomba Regional Council has approved the construction of a massive solar electricity farm on the Darling Downs.
According to The Chronicle, Solar Choice plans to build the farm at Bulli Creek between Millmerran and Goondiwindi.
Speaking to The Chronicle, Managing Director Mr Angus Gemmell said his company was working with Powerlink to “determine the capacity for power fed into the electricity grid.”
Mr Gemmell said when fully operational the farm could produce up to two gigawatts of electricity, however the project would be built in smaller, manageable stages.
The first stage of the project is expected to cost between $750 million and $1 billion with construction to start in the later half of 2016.
The site, west of the Great Dividing Range, was chosen due to it’s proximity to an electricity substation and for elevated levels of sunshine.
The Chronicle also says, “Plans have also allowed for battery storage warehouses, which could feed electricity onto the grid at night time.”
Mr Gemmell said the new farm would provide Queensland with more choices for less cost.
“Hopefully, this will be good news for our country in terms of energy mix.”
