Spending Christmas alone? How to cope with loneliness

Depressed miner

Loneliness at Christmas is common in the mining and energy industries, especially among fly-in fly-out workers. QMEB has found the following tips to help you beat the holiday blues.

Admit you have a problem, plan ahead

Christmas comes every year so, if you are tired of feeling lonely, plan ahead and meet with some mates or even join a community Christmas celebration where you can enjoy a good feed and meet others who are also alone during the holidays.

Network with other like-minded people

This may not seem obvious at first, but there are people who share the same hobbies and interests as you do. Make an effort to join the local sports, hobby or social club. Some of them will hold events during the festive season and possibly even on New Year’s Eve. One very clever man successfully advertised a free movie ticket on Gumtree as a non-confronting way to meet with women that possibly led to regular dating and romance.

Log out from your social media accounts

During the festive season, news feeds are often loaded with family photos and other happy snaps that will probably make you even more self-conscious about spending the holidays alone. Do yourself a favour and log-out from your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Do some volunteer/charity work

Sometimes keeping yourself busy and helping the less fortunate can take your mind off the holidays, and even bring happiness to others and yourself too. The feeling of accomplishment is often very satisfying and meeting others who volunteer can lead to great friendships or even more.

FIFO Life has a great Christmas segment on coping with loneliness at Christmas time.
