The Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) headquarters has fallen victim to a gun attack.
Police are investigating after at least half a dozen shots were recently fired at CFMEU’s building in Carlton, Victoria.
“The front door of an office was shattered in the Swanston Street building just after 3am [on 21 December 2016],” Victoria Police leading senior constable Kendra Jackson says.
“No one was injured during the incident and Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au”
CFMEU Victorian state secretary John Setka claims he does not know who the gunman was, but concedes the union is not friends with everybody and the list of suspects would be “long and distinguished”.
Setka slammed the attack as a “petty cowardly act … just before Christmas”.
“Our priority is to look after the staff at the office who are shocked and frightened. Thankfully no one was harmed and we can confirm that all staff are safe,” the union says in a statement.
Although about 150 people work in the building, the timing of the shooting helped avoid casualties.
Despite the absence of injuries, staff were unable to enter the building while the police investigation continues.
Swanston Street has been reopened.
