Yeppoon, Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast are preparing themselves for very strong winds and torrential rain as the newly-named Cyclone Marcia heads their way.
The latest warning from the Bureau of Meteorology, issued at 5.49am this morning, said Marcia was expected to cross the coast early Friday morning as a category 2 cyclone.
Associated with the cyclone is a trough that will bring heavy rain the strong wind gusts throughout today to the Wide Bay and South East Coast regions of Queensland.
Along the coast and ranges, Damaging wind gusts may reach up to 90 km an hour.
All areas between Mackay and Double Island Point are subject to the Tropical Cyclone Warning. Inland areas from St Lawrence to Double Island Point are under a Tropical Cyclone Watch.
The Bureau is expecting heavy rains to extend to the eastern Darling Downs, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Granite Belt later this afternoon and Friday. Rain in excess of 300mm over a 24 hour period, in some areas, can be expected. The high volume of rain over short periods of time has prompted the Bureau to issue a warning over the possibility of flash-flooding for the Wide Bay and Burnett, Southeast Coast, Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts
Warwick, the Lockyer Valley, Ipswich, Caboolture, the Sunshine Coast, Kingaroy and Gympie may also be affected by extreme weather conditions over the next two days.
The Bureau will release their next warning at 11.50am.
