Former Palmer United Party senator Glenn Lazarus has threatened to tackle Prime Minister Tony Abbott if he does not limit coal seam gas exploration.

Senator Lazarus presented the Prime Minister’s office with a petition to allow greater community consultation, health impact assessments, as well as exclusion zones around CSG, where he jokingly told an anti-CSG rally in Sydney that he would use “Hopoate tactics”.

The former rugby league player, renowned for his crushing style on the field, said he was prepared to “squirrel grip the Prime Minister”.

“If that doesn’t work, I’ve got other things up my sleeve, like the grapple tackle, the chicken wing and even the crusher tackle,” Senator Lazarus said.

“If that doesn’t work, I’m prepared to use the Hopoate tactics.”

The Senator then took the threat even further, referring to an incident on the NRL field in 2001 when John Hopoate  inserted his finger into opponents’ anuses.
