Workers sacked at Pilbara Cloudbreak mine

WORKERS from Cloudbreak mine in Western Australia have been sacked today, as the Perth-based iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group revises its roster.

FMG said workers should have been aware the job losses were coming, as it raised the prospect of potential redundancies on April 14, when it announced a roster change.

“The roster change decision has been a very difficult one for all of us, but unfortunately was beyond our control,” a Fortescue spokesperson said.

“We have communicated with our workforce consistently since the decision was announce two weeks ago.

“A range of support services are available for all those impacted, including chaplaincy support, employee assistance and outplacement services.

“As we transition to our new operational roster, which will bring our rosters into line with the standard rosters worked in the Pilbara iron ore industry, we are working through changes to our organisational structure across our sites. As part of this process, all opportunities for internal transfers are being fully explored.”

Fortescue would not comment on how many positions were cut.
