Construction in full swing at $21B coal project despite COVID

A worldwide pandemic and recession has failed to stop work at a $21 billion coal development in Central Queensland’s Galilee Basin.

Adani Australia has confirmed construction is mostly unaffected by the Chinese coronavirus recession at its Carmichael Coal Project, 160km northwest of Clermont.

Since the project was approved in June 2019 work has progressed on removing overburden from the open pit, clearing land, surveying, fencing and civil earthworks. Adani contractors have also built roads, pads, site offices, a dam, an expanded airfield and rail track, among others.

1500 people hired

More than 1500 mine workers have been hired and $1.5 billion in contracts awarded for the full project. More than 88 per cent of the successful contractors are based in the Sunshine State.

“Our mine and rail camps are nearing capacity, and altogether we have more than 1500 people working on the project at site and at our Brisbane, Townsville and Rockhampton offices,” Adani Mining CEO David Boshoff said in a public statement.

“This is just the construction phase. The permanent roles will come with the operation of the mine and rail, bringing prosperity to the people and economies of regional Queensland for decades to come.”

Recruiting now

The proponent is so upbeat it will meet its target to produce coal in the New Year that it is still hiring new workers.

Current vacancies include:

  • diesel fitters (multiple positions)
  • track engineers (multiple)
  • plant operators (multiple)
  • lead cost engineers (multiple)
  • civil package managers (multiple)
  • mine planning engineers (multiple)
  • contracts administrators (multiple)
  • environmental advisors – rail (multiple)
  • quality assurance/quality control officers (multiple)
  • geological and geotechnical superintendents (multiple).

“We are looking forward to the day next year when we can celebrate our success with our Queensland partners and employees, while watching the first shipment of coal being exported,” Boshoff said.

“Until then, it remains full speed ahead on construction … the Stop Adani movement said our project would never go ahead and would never create a single job. We have proved our opponents wrong.”
