One of the world’s largest mining services providers is widely expected to plead guilty for failing to meet safety rules and causing death.
QMEB understands that Thiess Australia is preparing to enter a guilty plea at Mackay Magistrates Court in relation to two charges of “failing to discharge health and safety obligations”, which is blamed for causing death or grievous bodily harm.
Defence lawyer John Rodney recently told magistrate Damien Dwyer he is keen to settle the matter, but will need more time to exchange information with the prosecution.
“It would be our hope that the matter proceed by the papers without the need for any evidence to be called,” Rodney says.
“I seek to have the matter to be brought back in the last week of January.”
Magistrate Dwyer confirmed Rodney “advises a plea of guilty after an agreed statement of facts is completed”.
The matter could be finalised as early as 25 January 2017.
