A memorial service was held in Moura last Friday to remember those Queenslanders who have lost their lives to mining disasters since mining first began in the state.
Fittingly, the service was held on the anniversary of the worst mining disaster in Queensland’s history, the Mount Mulligan mining disaster of 1921 in which 75 workers were killed.
Speaking to the Central Telegraph, Australian Miners Workers Union Central Queensland organiser Phil Golby said it was important to remember those who have perished.
“These guys went to work to put food on the table for their families and, because of that, today we are aware of the dangers of current-day mining.” Mr Golby said.
“This is part of the families’ heritage and we can’t forget the past.”
“If it wasn’t for the union, mining wouldn’t be as safe today,” he said.
Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Andrew Cripps said the annual memorial reminded the community of the importance of safety measures in mining.
“We can appreciate those workers who lost their lives through continuing with legislation,” he said.
