One of Queensland’s most lucrative scholarships for regional university students is up for grabs.
JCU Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery student Muskaan Singh is halfway through her studies and she says being a QCoal Foundation Scholarship holder for the past three years has opened up many possibilities, as well as providing her with a pathway to attend university.
The QCoal Foundation scholarship, valued at $10,000 per year for three years, is open to Queensland undergraduate students who completed Year 12 within two years prior to studying at JCU, or students who are commencing second year in a Geology or Earth Science undergraduate course.
Eligible students who are passionate about making a difference in rural and remote Queensland are encouraged to apply for the scholarship.
Muskaan Singh was awarded the scholarship in her first year of University in 2016 and said it had made an enormous difference to her studies and helped her meet living expenses.
“I am extremely passionate about enhancing rural and remote healthcare, which is why I was drawn to JCU’s medical program in the first place. However, living away from home is expensive.”
Originally from Mackay and Glenden, Ms Singh said the scholarship had opened up so many possibilities, helping her to meet living expenses and get the most out of her studies.
“During the past three years, the QCoal Foundation Scholarship has alleviated any financial issues that could have impacted my academic or university life.
“I would love to return to small towns after establishing myself in my preferred field of medicine, maybe to undertake short-period locum positions in rural towns across Australia.”
QCoal Foundation Chairman Christopher Wallin said Ms Singh epitomised the scholarship’s focus and goal which is to support the development of resilient rural and remote Queensland communities.
“We are so pleased that QCoal has been able to support Ms Singh through three years of her studies. She has been a very deserving recipient of the $10,000 a year Scholarship and I am sure that she will continue to make an important contribution to her profession and the rural are remote communities she works in.
The QCoal Foundation supports initiatives that are focused on health, liveability and education in rural and remote Queensland communities. In particular, the Foundation is helping provide a pathway for rural and remote students to attend university.
