$25 million Mudgeeraba Substation upgrade complete

The Commonwealth Games has come and gone but the Queensland Government’s long-term investment in a reliable electricity network for Gold Coast is here to stay.

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the recent completion of a $25 million upgrade at Mudgeeraba Substation had improved the security and reliability of the electricity supply for the Commonwealth Games and for the wider Gold Coast region into the future.

“Mudgeeraba Substation and Molendinar together are the two main power supply hubs for the Gold Coast,“ he said.

“The completion of the upgrade ensured electricity supply was as safe and as secure as possible at a time when the eyes of the world were on the Gold Coast.

“The upgrade supported up to 50 local jobs and has extended the life of the infrastructure in a safe, and cost-effective way.

“Importantly, after more than 40 years of service already, Mudgeeraba can now continue to provide a reliable electricity supply for many years to come as the Gold Coast grows.”

Work began in 2016 and involved an upgrade of primary and secondary systems, including installing a new 250MVA transformer to replace the old which was more than 40 years old. The works also included control building and fencing.

Powerlink Queensland Chief Executive Merryn York said their team had focused on meeting deadlines and ensured that the major components of the upgrade were completed before the Commonwealth Games.
