A mineral producer received the nod to proceed with a revised coking coal operation in Central Queensland’s Isaac region.

The State Department of Environment and Science formally approved Bowen Coking Coal’s environmental authority amendments for the Broadmeadow East Project, 200km southwest of Mackay.

This decision means the Bowen Basin operation is one step closer to first production. No further regulatory approvals are required before mining commences.

The open-cut project involves spending the next five to seven years extracting and processing up to 1.1 million tonnes of coal per annum from the expanded Burton Complex, which comprises of the existing Burton Coal Mine and New Lenton Project.

The product will be exported using existing infrastructure under a sharing agreement with Fitzroy (CQ), which fast-tracks development. The mine has an Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Committee resource estimate of 33 million tonnes.

“The approval renders the project ‘shovel ready’ at a time when coking coal prices are rallying to record highs. We are in the final stages of our mining contractor selection process with a target for first coal production from Broadmeadow East in the June quarter to be processed through the Fitzroy infrastructure,” managing director and CEO Gerhard Redelinghuys said in a public statement.

No jobs were advertised at the time of publication.
