A coal project recently commenced mining activities in Queensland’s Central Highlands region.
Bowen Coking Coal confirmed it has already started operating its new Bluff Coal Mine, 175km west of Rockhampton.
The proponent recently awarded a mining contract to HSE Mining, which will spend the next three years safely and efficiently preparing the pit for resource extraction work. The successful bidder will use its own equipment, staff, systems and procedures under the proponent’s supervision. There is also potential for the deal to be extended for an extra four years.
HSE, which is owned by Swire Mining Logistics Industrial, also offered fly-in fly-out (FIFO) applicants a $2000 bonus when receiving a job offer, and an extra $2000 retention bonus for staying on at the project.
The following permanent, full-time FIFO job vacancies have been advertised:
- EX2500 and R996 excavator operators (multiple positions)
- Cat 785 and 793 haul truck operators (multiple)
- Cat 777 or 773 water cart operators (multiple)
- Cat D10 and D11 dozer operators (multiple)
- 16M grader operators (multiple)
- 844 wheel dozers (multiple).

“With the majority of the fleet on site, the project will be back in full operation by April [2022] – do not miss your chance.”
Two excavator fleets have also been procured, including a 600 tonne (t) Liebherr R-996 for bulk overburden removal and a 250t Hitachi EX-2500 for extra overburden removal and coal mining. Initial resource extraction will occur within the existing pit using the EX-2500 while the R-996 will remove overburden to extend the pit along the strike in a southerly direction.
The ramp-up phase is promised to deliver a monthly run-of-mine (ROM) production of between 80 kilo tonnes (kt) and 100kt at the end of July 2022. This represents an annual production rate of between 1 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) and 1.2Mtpa ROM.
