One of the nation’s largest mineral producers put worker homes on the market in Queensland’s Central Highlands region.

Kestrel Coal recently advertised up to 143 employee-occupied properties in downtown Emerald, 271km west of Rockhampton.

The dwellings, comprising of “quality houses and unit blocks”, cover a combined 6.7 hectares. They are promised to generate $1.7 million in annual passive income, and fetch an estimated $25 million purchase price.

“Colliers Brisbane and Knight Frank Rockhampton are extremely proud to offer for the first time the Kestrel coal portfolio,” Knight Frank said on the Commercial Ready website.

“The portfolio is truly a rare opportunity to acquire 143 residential dwellings in one line, being Australia’s most defensive asset class. All dwellings are being offered for sale with a seven-year leaseback to Kestrel Coal.”

The buildings were originally constructed to house employees from the old Gordonstone mine back in the late 1980s to early 1990s. Some Kestrel workers still lived on the premises at the time of publication.

The proponent promises the sale is in their best interests.

“Kestrel has an unwavering commitment to its people. The aim of any path the company will take will be to optimise the housing benefit for our employees into the future,” a spokesperson said according to News Limited.
