Downer secures another 5 years at Commodore coal mine

Downer EDI today announced it had been awarded a contract by Millmerran Power Partners to continue the provision of mining services at the Commodore coal mine near Millmerran on the Darling Downs.

The contract commences on 1 September 2014 and is for a five-year term, valued between $200-250 million, with the option for a five-year extension.

Downer has been providing a total mining service at Commodore since 2000 to deliver coal to the Millmerran Power Station.

The scope of works includes operating and managing the mine and associated activities, including mine planning and design, overburden removal, drill and blast, coal mining and rehabilitation. Downer also holds statutory
responsibility for the mine site.

The Chief Executive Officer of Downer, Grant Fenn, said the new contract was a clear demonstration of Downer’s ability to deliver value for its customers.

“We are delighted to be continuing this 14-year partnership,” he said. “It is due to the strength of our relationship with Millmerran Power Partners that Commodore has become our flagship mining project in terms of environmental sustainability. It has been one of the first open cut coal mines in the world to completely switch its total fuel use to biodiesel and has also pioneered a program to independently verify fugitive methane
emissions.”
