Two construction companies are hiring multiple remote workers for a new $777 million development in North Queensland’s Etheridge Shire.

A joint venture between McConnell Dowell and John Holland recently started recruiting hundreds of workers at Genex Power’s Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project in Einasleigh, 382km west of Cairns.

Expressions of interest have been advertised for the following full time, fly-in fly-out (FIFO) roles:

  • tunnel miners service crew (multiple positions)
  • excavator operators (multiple)
  • dump truck drivers (multiple)
  • bogger operators (multiple)
  • jumbo operators (multiple)
  • dozer operators (multiple)
  • shotcreters (multiple)
  • electricians (multiple)
  • mechanics (multiple)
  • shotfirers (multiple).

“If you are looking for an opportunity to join our team in a trades, labour or operator role we may have the opportunity for you. We anticipate the need for a variety of field-based roles over the life of the project,” John Holland said on its careers website.

At least 120 new recruits have started building Wises Dam, which has a maximum capacity of 4.5 gigalitres. Captured water will spin two, 125 megawatt turbines for up to eight hours. The project team expects to employ up to 900 people by mid-2023.

The full project is on-track for completion, and connection to the National Electricity Market, sometime in early 2025.
