Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines To Face Charges Over Death of Contractor in 2013

Mount Isa Mines Copper SmelterGlencore’s Mount Isa Mines was mentioned in the Mount Isa Magistrates Court yesterday, in relation to alleged safety breaches that led to the death of a contractor in March 2013.

The company is facing 11 charges relating to the death of Jordan Taurima who died after being struck on the head by a “dislodged pump” at the mine’s copper smelter.

Also being charged over the incident is Incitec Pivot who own Satin Touch, the company that Taurima worked for as a cleaning sub-contractor;  J&L Schmider who own Schmider Engineering Group; and individuals, Kim Timonen and Brian Corrie.

According to the ABC,  the Department of Natural Resources and Mines will claim that Taurima died “because those charged failed to comply with the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act.”
