Miners urged to give up the ciggies

Queensland miners  are being encouraged to participate in a free Workplace Quit Smoking Program being offered by the government’s  Workplaces for Wellness Initiative.

The program aims to target  workers in blue collar occupations and high risk industries including mining, construction, transport and utilities (gas, electricity and water). The structured program combines the use of behavioural counselling with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).

The Department of Health’s Quitline service (13QUIT), a confidential telephone smoking counselling service will deliver the program. Counsellors will provide advice and support to people wanting to quit smoking.

Expected outcomes from implementing the program include increased productivity, reduced absenteeism, reduced rates of illness and injury, and reduced exposure of non-smoking workforce to tobacco smoke.

Workplaces need to have management commitment to the program and a program coordinator if they want to sign up for the program. More information is available on this leaflet.
