A multinational resources company is proceeding with a $1.5 billion coal project in Central Queensland’s Bowen Basin.

Glencore wants state and federal approval for its new Valeria Coal Mine, 265km west of Rockhampton.

The proponent confirmed various studies and assessments are underway, and the project will eventually meet net-zero carbon emissions. It plans to achieve this target through reducing emissions by 15 per cent by 2026, halving emissions by 2035 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

“The development of any coal project, including Valeria, will take into account Glencore’s climate change strategy and stated emission reduction targets,” the company said according to the Australian Associated Press.

State Coordinator-General Barry Broe has already declared Valeria a coordinated project, which means it requires a strict impact assessment involving whole-of-government coordination, either through a comprehensive environmental impact statement or a targeted impact assessment report.

The project involves constructing an open-cut operation, which is capable of producing up to 20 million tonnes per annum run of mine coal with an estimated lifespan of 35 years. At least one proposed infrastructure corridor will include rail, roads, electricity, water and telecommunications. A 300-bed accommodation camp will also be required.

QMEB can reveal the project will create up to 1400 construction jobs plus a further 950 operational positions once construction has ended. None of these jobs were advertised at the time of publication.

Meanwhile, Glencore is separately hiring multiple open-cut mining operators at its Hail Creek Coal Mine, 138km southwest of Mackay.

The right applicants will be offered a rotating roster of seven days on, seven days off. Modern village accommodation, meals, bus transport to Mackay, and performance bonuses are available. The advertised salary range is between $136,480 and $141,680 per annum.
