The Newlands Northern mine near Collinsville, north west of Mackay, will cease operations by 2015 according to mine owners, Glencore Xstrata.
The closure is a planned one, with the mine reaching the end of it’s projected life. Production will continue until all remaining coal has been extracted from the existing longwall panel, which is expected to take until the end of the year.
In a statement the company said, “As part of the process toward the mine’s closure, development activities will cease at the end of June 2014 following the establishment of the final longwall panel,”
It’s believed the closure will affect around 50 employees.
Glencore Xstrata has submitted applications for three new mining leases with the view to extending the life of the Newlands operation, however it is unclear at the stage if or when construction on any new extension might begin.
