Proposed Hillalong coal mine to create local jobs

A proposed mine in Central Queensland will create more than 350 local jobs if approved.

Shandong Energy’s Hillalong Coal Project will be located near Nebo in the Bowen Basin.

The open-cut mine is expected to produce up to 1.8 million tonnes a year of high-volatile coking and thermal coal.

A workforce of 400 would be required at the peak of construction works and 436 during operations.

The majority of the workforce would be local drive-in drive-out workers.

The project is currently undergoing an environmental impact assessment and is open for submissions. until May 31.

Mackay deputy mayor Amanda Camm said council was backing the project, which would source 75 per cent of jobs from the Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac regions.
