QCoal has has been named 2014 Queensland Miner of the Year at the Mining 2014 Resources Convention in Brisbane overnight.
The Award was presented to Christopher Wallin, Managing Director of QCoal Group by Mines Minister Andrew Cripps.
QCoal Group currently operates the Sonoma Mine, Cows Mine and Drake Mine south of Collinsville and plans to open the Byerwen coal project towards the end of next year.
QCoal Group currently exports 4 million tonnes of coal from existing operations and expects to export 20 million tonnes of coal in 2020 based on its project pipeline, in particular the Byerwen coal project. Once fully operational the Byerwen coal project will supply 10 million tonnes of premium hard coking coal to the global steel industry each year. The Byerwen coal project is in the final stages of obtaining approval from the Queensland government to proceed.
Mr Wallin said the company’s strong project pipeline was a direct result of over 20 years of uninterrupted exploration in Queensland.
“In addition to continuous investment in greenfield exploration, we have a strong focus on efficiency across our operations and this makes our projects sustainable at long run coal prices”.
“This award is recognition of the commitment of the QCoal team and our operating partners Leighton, Sedgman and SAB Mining to excellence in efficiency of our operations while maintaining our commitment to safety” Mr Wallin said, “It is also recognition of the many years of effort from the QCoal team to discover and develop world class coal deposits”.
