A Bowen Basin mine employee was farewelled after almost five decades in the job.

Kay Orr recently retired after serving 48 years at BHP Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) Blackwater Coal Mine, 217km west of Rockhampton.

Orr started her career in 1975 as a tea girl serving beverages and biscuits to colleagues in the office. In the next four decades she worked as a telex operator, office manager’s secretary, accounts payable officer, payroll officer, receptionist and finally maintenance administrator’s officer.

She has worked for so long the company even dedicated a special space in her honour.

“It is a common joke that Kay is part of the furniture at Blackwater mine, and the team have made sure she continues to have a permanent place, creating the Kay Orr Lounge in the main admin building at site with a plaque sharing her story,” a BHP spokesperson said.

“Congratulations on a wonderful 48 years Kay and thank you for your valued contribution, your legacy will be long-lasting.”
