QRC welcomes gas supply deal

The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) welcomes the gas supply deal announced this week by Minister Lynham between New Century Resources and Santos.

QRC Chief Executive Ian Macfarlane said the contract would see Santos supply nine petajoules of gas to meet the electricity demands of New Century Resources tailing operation near Mount Isa.

“The resources sector continues to deliver regional jobs, this time 240 jobs through a $100 million investment that will provide New Century Resources with enough electricity to produce half a million tons of zinc concentrate annually,” Mr Macfarlane said.

“It’s great to see one QRC member, supplying another member to support value adding in Queensland jobs. The partnership will lead to the production of high-grade zinc concentrate which can be used for corrugated zinc steel roofing on many Queenslander homes or galvanised steel of our bridges and skyscrapers.

“The QRC backs Minister Lynham’s proactive approach to gas and calls on the governments of New South Wales and Victoria to follow in the footsteps of Queensland and work with industry to responsibly develop their own gas reserves.”
