Thiess awarded new $250 million contract for Jellinbah Plains

Jellinbah ThiessThiess has been awarded a new $250 million contract by Jellinbah Resources to operate the Jellinbah Plains open-pit, part of the Jellinbah East coal mine near Blackwater in Central Queensland.

The 39-month contract, commencing 1 January 2015, follows the completion of the existing contract with Leighton Contractors.

Leighton Holdings Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Marcelino Fernández Verdes said: “This contract illustrates how the Leighton Group can leverage its scale as the world’s largest mining contractor to deliver value to our clients.”

Thiess Managing Director Bruce Munro paid tribute to the long and successful relationship between Thiess and the Jellinbah Group, which dates back to the establishment of its Lake Vermont coal mine in 2007.

Mr Munro said: “We are delighted to extend our partnership with Jellinbah Group and to continue our focus on bringing cost efficiencies and innovation to the mine site.

“This contract win demonstrates that there are still strong opportunities for clients and their partners to deliver exceptional value in the coal mining industry.”
