Whitehaven Beach

Regularly voted one of the top 10 beaches in the world, Whitehaven Beach is gobsmackingly gorgeous. No really, you will never want to leave this place. Even when the beers run out. And when the beers do eventually run out you won’t have to leave for long because the funky tourist town of Airlie Beach on the mainland is just a half hour boat ride away.

Boasting silica-white sands fringed by glassy turquoise waters on one side and lush rainforest the other, Whitehaven Beach is nestled on Whitsunday Island in the heart of the world-famous Whitsunday archipelago.

The whole island is national park – pure unspoilt wilderness – however if you’re up for a bit of spoiling, exotic 5 star resorts are located a short boat ride away on Hayman and Hamilton Islands. On these islands you can take a break from ‘roughing it’ and enjoy five star dining, massages and cocktail hour before heading back to your no-fuss campsite – best of both worlds!

Also on these islands you can access diving tours of the nearby Great Barrier Reef, helicopter joy rides, kite-surfing lessons, maxi-yacht cruises, parasailing and all the water sports you can handle.

Access: Only by boat
Best time of year: Any time
Best bit: One of the best beaches in the world
