Bravus Mining and Resources has partnered with its principal contractor DRA Global to expedite training, development and employment of First Nations individuals in Queensland’s Isaac region.
DRA’s First Nations Traineeship Programme aims to bring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals into pivotal roles essential to the operations of the Carmichael coal mine near Clermont with a capacity of 10 million tonnes per annum.
At the Carmichael Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP), overseen by DRA, the high-quality thermal coal from the Galilee Basin is prepared for global distribution, especially targeting countries addressing their energy needs.
Bravus chief operating officer Mick Crowe highlighted that the traineeship opportunities would focus on the Wangan and Jagalingou, Jangga, Birriah and Juru Traditional Owners. From the inception of the Carmichael project Bravus has prioritised engagement with Traditional Owners. The First Nations Traineeship by DRA complements Bravus’s existing Indigenous initiatives, aiming for long-term benefits for Traditional Owners and the broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Crowe also emphasised the rewarding nature of careers in the resource sector and potential transformative impact of these traineeships.
The two-year Traineeship Programme encompasses roles such as CHPP operator, site administrator, and site health, safety, and environment administrator. The recruitment process is designed to be inclusive, focusing on skills and experience rather than demographic factors.
Michael Carretta, DRA’s senior vice president for APAC Delivery, shared that the programme underscores the importance of cultural diversity, aiming for greater inclusivity in the mining sector. DRA’s commitment is towards a workforce that genuinely represents the communities they serve, with a keen focus on local talent to drive economic growth. Collaborating with Bravus, DRA seeks to enhance their engagement with Australia’s First Nations communities.
Bravus remains steadfast in its commitment to the communities it serves. The company prioritises local employment and regional Queensland procurement. Bravus’ Indigenous Participation Plan mandates a significant representation of First Nations individuals in their workforce. Additionally, Bravus has earmarked substantial funds for educational initiatives for First Nations students and business development.
