A mineral producer will transition away from fossil fuels towards more environmentally friendly alternatives.

Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) recently confirmed it would introduce its first-ever battery electric haul truck prototype. The heavy vehicle will be trialled at different Pilbara operations, with a 3 megawatt fast charger and an offboard power unit for trucks, excavators and other machinery.

A hydrogen fuel cell version will also tested as part of the company’s so-called “break up” with diesel.

“Our first battery electric haul truck is now on-site as we prepare to replace our fleet with zero emission trucks and equipment with battery electric and green hydrogen models. We are also ramping up our renewable power on site to replace fossil fuel power with renewable electricity,” CEO Dino Otranto said at the United Nations headquarters.

“The time for excuses is over – we need to break up with fossil fuels,” the FMG website added.

Battery electric and green hydrogen haul truck fleets will be developed and expanded during the 2024 and 2025 financial years according to the company’s roadmap.
