Every Easter, Gladstone revels in the spotlight when the much-anticipated Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race comes to town. With one of Australia’s highest boat ownership rates per capita, Gladstone really puts on a show, welcoming yachties and party-goers in style to the Gladstone Harbour Festival. The weeklong festival attracts over 70,000 people every year and is one of the largest free community festivals in Australia.
The Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race is steeped in history and tradition with the first Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race held in 1949. The first race saw seven vessels start, two of which carried radios while Brisbane’s Homing Pigeon Club supplied pigeons to the others for position reporting.
