Mining magnate supports phasing out fossil fuels

A resources mogul endorsed abandoning commodities produced from prehistoric organic matter.

Fortescue Metals Group supported the national transition away from coal, oil and gas.

Founding chairman Andrew Forrest openly admitted he believes in climate change, a theory that burning fossil fuels creates carbon dioxide emissions which can influence long-term weather patterns.

“If you know anything about economics and environmental science, as global warming is set upon us decades earlier than we expected, it is the only responsible thing to do,” he said according to News Limited.

“You can walk and wade across rivers which you have never been able to do in recorded human history. The impact of global warming is not 2050 – it is actually right now.”

Forrest claims renewable energy will eventually be advanced enough to replace coal, oil and gas altogether. This will help Australia achieve net-zero targets sooner.

“Australia has that sun and wind and it could actually be a huge energy exporter, and that could be one of the economic benefits that turns us back into the Lucky Country,” he said according to the media outlet.

“We do have a country which can be the Saudi Arabia of energy but it is 100 per cent green and, anyone who says ‘Hey look that is a dream’, I can tell you it is not.”

The Federal Government was still considering at the time of publication whether to ban new coal and gas projects. The Australian Greens proposed the measure to help achieve 43 per cent emissions reduction.
