A mining operation received the regulatory nod to increase activity in Queensland’s Isaac region.

The State Government recently approved Fitzroy Australia’s Carborough Downs Coal Extension in Coppabella, 163km southwest of Mackay.

The decision allows the mine’s lifespan to increase by 11 years. This is promised to deliver greater certainty to more than 700 affected employees. Nearly 70 per cent of them are either locals or drive-in drive-out workers.

“The Carborough Downs mine is a significant employer and economic contributor for the Isaac region, and this extension ensures the future stability of those jobs,” State Resources Minister Scott Stewart said in a public statement.

“This extension will create flow on economic benefits for the entire Isaac region from tools, safety and workwear suppliers right through to our pubs, cafés and accommodation providers.”

Coal production from the new extension is expected to start sometime in the next 12 months.
