CQ Rescue Health Services

For almost a decade, CQ Rescue Health Services has been improving the safety, productivity, health and efficiency of workforces in Central Queensland.

Employers in the mining, agricultural, engineering and transport industries, who test their workforce using the service’s professional and efficient NATA accredited testing facility, are also helping fund a vital lifesaving community service, RACQ CQ Rescue.

Testing fosters partnerships

CQ Rescue Health Services Business Manager Samantha O’Neill said the drug testing service was established in 2010 and had grown significantly to be an industry leader in drug and alcohol testing establishing strong partnerships with businesses in a variety of industries throughout Mackay, Whitsundays and the Bowen Basin.

“We pride ourselves on our reputation for reliable testing methods, discretion, diplomacy and our ability to adhere to ethical and privacy issues,” O’Neill said. “We provide a professional and efficient NATA accredited testing facility and a huge bonus for this region, all proceeds from the service are used to fund the Mackay-based rescue helicopter which completes more than 600 missions each year.”

Various industries in Central and Northern Queensland rely heavily on stringent testing and flexibility to provide safe, 24-hour operations.

Certified and accredited

O’Neill said staff are certified testing officers trained by a nationally recognised training facility. CQ Rescue Health Services complies with and is accredited for Australian Standards as set out in:

(i) AS/NZS 4308:2019 Procedure for specimen collection and the detection and quantitation of drugs of abuse in urine and saliva
(ii) AS ISO 15189-2009 Medical laboratories – Particular requirements for quality and competence.

The service provides drug and alcohol testing in the following circumstances:

  • onsite blanket urine and saliva drug screening and alcohol testing
  • onsite random urine and saliva drug screening and alcohol testing
  • testing from the CQ Rescue office in Mackay at 4 Heidi Street, Paget – no appointment is necessary
  • screening results are instant – LC-MS laboratory confirmation following a “non-negative” test will take up to 48 hours. It will be received by CQ Rescue Health Services and forwarded to authorised personnel.

“Our testing process easily integrates with existing safety programs and we can create a fully customised program suitable to the needs of your company and work environment with minimal disruption to workflow,” O’Neill said.

CQ Rescue Health Services had continually proven to be an industry leader for nationally accredited drug and alcohol testing in the following ways:

  • all testing officers undertake training in nationally certified training programs and participate in regular competency testing
  • enrolment in RCPA Chemical Pathology Quality Assurance Program monitors the performance of urine and saliva test kits to ensure a high standard of proficiency
  • undergo regular accreditation audits conducted by NATA to ensure all standards are being met and guarantee a high level of compliance and professionalism.

“CQ Rescue Health Services’ helpful staff will assist with developing a schedule and provide ongoing support where requested. All relevant documentation, records and reports are confidentially managed by our staff,” O’Neill said.

Rapid response

Since 1996, CQ Rescue’s Bell 412 helicopter and crew has provided rapid response aeromedical care whenever, wherever there has been a call for help across Central and Northern Queensland.

“Our community-funded rescue helicopter provides peace of mind to people living, working and visiting this region and is synonymous with saving lives each and every day in this region,” O’Neill said. “The CQ Rescue crew’s rapid response to a call for assistance
makes a difference to hundreds of lives every year and has given many a second chance at life.”

O’Neill said that by using CQ Rescue Health Services, employers in various industries across the region were not only ensuring safer workplaces and more productive employees but importantly, also helping fund a vital lifesaving community service.
