Independent research found clean energy generated more power in the past month than one fossil fuel.

Wind power overtook brown coal, and became Australia’s second-largest source of electricity generated in June 2022.

Norway-headquartered Rystad Energy discovered wind turbines linked to the National Electricity Market and Wholesale Electricity Market generated a combined 2839 gigawatts per hour (GWh). This figure is touted to be the renewable’s best month ever for total national production.

“Wind generation overtook brown coal to become Australia’s second largest source of electricity generation in June. This is a trend that will continue over the next 24 months as a further 3.5 GW of wind assets at various stages of construction and commissioning become fully operational,” Rystad renewable research senior analyst David Dixon said on LinkedIn.

Capacity at Iberdrola Australia’s Woodlawn Wind Farm in New South Wales was 57.6 per cent. Windlab’s and Atmos Renewables’ 31 megawatt (MW) Kiata Wind Farm in South Australia reached 53.8 per cent.

Pacific Hydro Australia’s Taralga Wind Farm in NSW recorded a 53.5 per cent capacity, while Powerchina’s and Goldwind’s 144 MW Cattle Hill Wind Farm in Tasmania hit 49.4 per cent.

Victoria became the first state to generate 1088 GWh in a single month.

“Victoria became the first state to generate more than [one] terawatt hour from wind generation on a monthly basis,” Dixon said.
