An international mineral producer significantly reduced its fatality rate through behavioural change.
South32 reported no workplace deaths for the first half of the 2024 financial year. The company revealed its secret to zero fatalities was workers better understanding risk management processes.
“We have seen improved hazard awareness with a 29 per cent increase in the hazard frequency metric over the first half (H1) of fiscal 2024 (FY24),” South32 said in its latest results.
“Our total recordable injury frequency reduced by 12 per cent over H1 FY24, and we expect the lost time injury frequency to follow this positive reporting trend over time.”
The proponent also invested significantly in safety leadership through its internal program, which helps leaders engage teams on their so-called safety guarantee.
“Our Lead Safely Every Day program continued to be deployed across our leadership teams in H1 FY24, and will be extended to our frontline workforce from H2 FY24,” it said.
“We continue to implement our safety improvement program, a multi-year global program, which was launched in FY22.”
The remarks came more than a year after two workers died and one contractor was seriously injured at the Mozal smelter, 23km west of downtown Maputo.
Although the contractor survived after receiving emergency medical treatment, colleagues and loved ones still grieve the tragic fatalities of Cristovão Alberto Tonela and Alfredo Francisco Domingos João in Potroom A on 7 November 2022.
The company has already worked with the original equipment manufacturer to introduce exclusion zones, controlled areas and replace critical components in all girders.
